Dr. Sam Bentley

Professor, Department of Geology

Billy and Ann Harrison Chair in Sedimentary Geology

Director, LSU Coastal Studies Institute

+1 (225)578-5735

I am a marine sedimentologist. My work involves field, laboratory, and modeling studies of sediments and stratigraphy on continental margins of ocean basins, including the Mississippi Delta. My specific interests include applications of sediment radiochemistry to studies of sediment flux and accumulation along margins, among other things.

Although my students are working on projects from the tropics to the Arctic, much of my interest here in Louisiana is focused on Mississippi Delta conservation and restoration. My work as director of LSU’s Coastal Studies Institute is one example. Also, I have participated in a large study of delta restoration strategies, supported by the National Audubon Society, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the National Wildlife Federation. I have been leading research in the Mississippi Delta and many other places around the world since 1999, and working as a consulting geologist and geology student before then, since 1983. Please feel free to explore the documents I have placed here, and contact me if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Sam
