MINERALS

A mineral is composed of atoms arranged in an orderly, repeating three-dimensional structure. To be considered a mineral in geologic terms, a substance must satisfy four conditions: be a crystalline solid; occur naturally; be inorganic; have a definite chemical composition. Minerals have specific temperature ranges at which they are stable. The chemical composition of rocks may be the same, but the minerals will be different. This is as a result of different temperature ranges at which the minerals are formed. The texture and the minerals found in a rock are determined by conditions of rock formation.
