Minerals

A mineral is formed when one or more elements, each having a unique atomic structure, are bonded together. When these elements join together they form a regular three dimensional pattern which is regularly repeated throughout that particular structure. This pattern is determined depending on what atoms are present at a certain temperature and pressure. In order for a material to be classified as a mineral, it is necessary that it meet four standards:

1. It must have a unique crystal structure.

2. It has unique physical properties (such as: color, texture, composition, size and/or shape, etc.).

3. It must have a unique chemical composition.

4. It must be a naturaly occurring inorganic material.
