ConocoPhillips

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

ConocoPhillips is an international, integrated energy company. It is the third-largest integrated energy company in the United States, based on market capitalization, and oil and natural gas proved reserves and production; and the second-largest refiner in the United States. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, ConocoPhillips operates in more than 40 countries. The company has 38,400 employees worldwide and assets of $165 billion.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

The GRAD program (for new-hire geoscientists during their first five years) accelerates career opportunities through skills development and helps to build a global workforce. Geoscientists typically broaden their experiences by working three assignments during their first two years in regional evaluation, prospect generation, field development, operations and/or advanced technologies. Experienced geoscientists mentor the new geoscientists. Geoscience interpretation skills will be enhanced during the first year through a nine week training program that covers the most critical aspects of exploration and field production.  Some geoscientists will have the opportunity to work in an office outside of their home country for 12 months during their 3rd through 5th years. The complexities of exploration and field development require a balance of being a generalist and a specialist. We cross-train geologists and geophysicists so that they are well-rounded geoscientists. We also recognize the need for advanced skills in special topics, and so encourage expertise in geology or geophysics and specialties within those fields. Travel and long-term international assignments may offer additional opportunities for career and personal development.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

BP LSU Challenge Program Flyer
You will be part of the Challenge Early Development Program. Throughout your career, you will continue to receive training and assignments that broaden your experience and horizons.  You may elect to specialize in geoscience, collaborating with engineers of all kinds, or you may choose to move cross-discipline into engineering or commercial areas.

As an entry level geoscientist you will have an opportunity for cross-disciplinary training.  You will work on subsurface teams alongside geologists, geophysicists and engineers as well as commercial, legal, political and technological experts, land negotiators and economists.  You will have the opportunity to develop a full range of multi-disciplinary professional skills.  Your early assignments may include 2D and 3D seismic interpretation as well as subsurface mapping and evaluation of stratigraphic information of all types and scales.  You will assist in a fully-integrated, geological and geophysical interpretation of the subsurface in order to identify hydrocarbon prospects.

FULL-TIME POSITIONS

We are searching for geoscientists to serve as vital members of our various subsurface teams in order to find and develop oil and gas all over the world.  We look for highly-motivated, people with a M.S. or Ph.D. in Geology or related fields.  In addition to strong academic achievement, we look for individuals who are innovative, take initiative, and communicate and work well with customers and diverse multi-discipline teams.

BP geoscientists utilize their skills in fundamental basics such as sedimentology and stratigraphy to help interpret various types of subsurface data.  Their interpretation of these data is then combined with other geological and geophysical information such as seismic, gravity and magnetics, outcrop information and remote sensing imagery.  Using these data, geoscientists create integrated interpretations of the subsurface in the form of maps, cross-sections and models.  These interpretations define and evaluate source rocks, hydrocarbon type, migration pathways, the size and shape of structural and stratigraphic traps, and reservoir characteristics such as porosity, permeability and hydrocarbon content.

INTERNSHIPS

Intern job qualifications are the same as those for full-time except that geoscientists  serve an approximate three-month internship as vital members of our various subsurface teams.  Intern geoscientists will be supervised by a BP professional who will provide guidance and monitoring while allowing them an appropriate degree of autonomy in their work.  They will follow an individual work plan and be assigned a project that sufficiently challenges their skills in on-the-job situations.  Our subsurface teams rely on deliverables from these projects to help ensure overall project success.

EnCana

Find Your Future With a Geology Position at EnCana

Students who pursue a geologist role at EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. have an exciting opportunity to work on world-class natural gas resources.  (One example is the
Jonah field in Wyoming, which is the fourth largest natural gas field in the United States, currently producing 2% of the total natural gas production in the USA.)  You’ll work side-by-side with industry experts who will help you develop the skills you need to make a difference from day one.  Utilizing cutting-edge geological, geophysical and engineering technologies, geologists at EnCana:

  • coordinate well site geologic operations
  • develop technical requirements
  • determine locations for wells
  • suggest additional opportunities inside and outside of an existing field
  • provide reservoir characterization for the field
  • build geocellular models for reservoir characterization and simulations
  • provide integrated geologic and geophysical evaluations
  • make critical decisions and recommendations, such as total depth, completion interval and data gathering requirements.

Our geologists are part of multi-discipline teams that include engineers, geophysicists, land negotiators, regulatory professionals, operations professionals and others with the varied expertise needed to achieve our strategic plans, providing tremendous opportunity to learn the full scope of oil and gas resource plays.

Where You Fit In (New Grads):

We offer a state-of-the-art new grad training program that includes valuable technical coursework and a real-life project, conducted within a business unit under the guidance of an experienced mentor.  Geologists at EnCana work with engineering, land and regulatory professionals to develop and implement our drilling program.  In addition to operations work, new grads have additional projects which include quantifying the size of EnCana’s resources and continually exploring for new opportunities.  Following training, geologists might find roles in new ventures, or on a development team.  Unlike some other companies, you will be given significant responsibility right away.

To be considered for a position as a Geologist, a graduate degree (master’s or higher) is required.

Where You Fit In (Interns):

EnCana interns have an exciting opportunity to work closely with experienced geologists on real-life projects.  Previous intern projects have included a study of the detailed fault patterns in shallower reservoir horizons (integrating both geology and geophysics) to provide a better understanding of the influence of internal faulting on productivity in different segments of the field, and observing the planning, drilling, completion and operation of new wells over the course of the summer.

EnCana is an EEO/AA employer.
