Constructing a geologic cross section of the Stickleyville quadrangle, Virginia

Part One (2/17)

1. Construct a topographic profile along the A-A' line from the Powell River, terminating at the Okl/Oma contact. Convert your profile (adjust horizontal scale) to fit on a sheet of 8.5" by 11" paper.

2. a)Use the strike and dip information given on the map close to the A-A' line, calculate the apparent dips for the cross section (include latitude and longitude locations along the profile where apparent dips were calculated).

b) Calculate the topographic gradient where beds outcrop along the profile and calculate the true thickness of each bed.

Due Thursday, Feb. 26;

1. Inked topographic profile with vertical and horizontal scale (numeric and graphic), orientation, Latitude and Logitude of end points, contour interval and room on right hand side of sheet for a legend.

2. Calculations of apparent dips, topographic gradient, and true thicknesses. Put the answers on a sheet with columns for true dip, apparent dip, topographic gradient, apparent thickness, and true thickness. Show all work.

Part Two (3/10)

2. Construct a stratigraphic column to accompany the cross section based on the unit thicknesses you calculated and the age relationships indicated by the unit symbols. Assign each unit a number with (1) being the oldest unit up to the youngest unit.

1. Draw a geologic cross section along the profile from the Powell River to the contact between Okl/Oma. Use apparent dips and unit thicknesses calculated in part one to construct your geologic cross section.

Final project (on 8.5" by 11" sheet of tracing paper)

1) Inked profile showing subsurface geology.

2) Numeric and graphic scale for both the vertical and

horizontal dimensions.

a) Horizontal scale (adjusted to fit profile to sheet).

b) Vertical scale (use 1"= 500', label units on scale).

3) Vertical exaggeration (V.E.= vertical scale/horizontal scale).

4) Title (bottom center of page).

5) Contour interval.

6) Orientation of profile line (above the end points).

7) Latitude and Longitude of profile end points, labeled on

the profile with the orientation.

8) Legend (on right hand side of profile).

9) Stratigraphic column (Inked and on separate sheet).

10) Color and label all units on the legend, profile and

stratigraphic column.

Note; include C.I., verbal scale (vert & horiz) and V.E. under the legend (bottom right side of sheet). Put horizontal scale bar on bottom left side of sheet.
