ALABAMA FIELD TRIP
March 28 (Thursday) - March 31 (Sunday) 1996
PARTICIPANTS
Two (2) groups of geology students: LSU (Dr. Juan M. Lorenzo),
and 20 from USF (Dr. Jeffrey G. Ryan)
Destination
Cheaha State Park, west of Birmingham, in the Talladega Mountains, south
of I20, about 400 miles from Baton Rouge.
Directions
I10 to Mobile, I65 to Birmingham, I85 toward Atlanta. Exit for Cheaha State Park lies just east of Oxford.
Time of Departure
8.00 a.m., Thursday, March 30th, southern Geology parking Lot.
Transport
Geology Department Van plus large trailer for belongings.
Estimated time of return
Hopefully, no later than 5.00 p.m. on Sunday, March 31st (same year)
Food:
Bring your own supplies* from Baton Rouge for: Thu. lunch, dinner
Frid:
breakfast, lunch and dinner, Saturday: breakfast, lunch and dinner,
Sunday: breakfast and lunch (hope to be back for dinner). We will
cook dinners at the campgrounds and do not plan to make special trips for
supplies. Lunch will be eaten in the field.
"Inedibles "(for example, this is what I will bring):
Sleeping bag, tent, mattress pad, pillow *, ground sheet for tent, camping
stove, tent light, cooking and eating utensils, canteen, flashlight, extra
batteries, a small amount of detergent for cleaning dishes after cooking,
a dish towel, light boots and sneakers (something dry to walk around in
after spending the day in the field), plastic slippers and towel for showering
(I hope there are showers). Clothes for the four days (plus extra set in
case I come back some day wet and cold). Rain gear, hat, gloves, scarf,
wind breaker (Prepare for the worst: rain or even snow).
* Advice: prepare to eat well and sleep comfortably if you want to be
as rested as possible to enjoy the trip and learn as much as you can.
Field Equipment
Hand lens, geological hammer, field note book and pencils, clipboard,
compass, camera, film, stereonet, tracing paper, a clipboard or hard surface
to work on.
Restrictions
In case of bad weather contact we have lodges. No alcoholic drinks are
permitted in university vehicles.

Please use the following instructions to prepare your field report on
the Alabama Structural Field Trip:
1) Summarise succinctly and in complete sentences the major geological
features observed at each stop (no more than half a page per stop). Include
representative cross-sections where needed with the appropriate scale,
oreintation and legends.
Suggestions:
Include definitions of concepts you learnt.
Analyse the data you collected using stereonets

N.B. Hand in report typed and bound (90%) and your field note book (10%
grade).
For BONUS points please hand in one or two of your key slides
or photos together with an appropriate figure caption in an envelope with
your name. We hope to include these figures in both a computer (WWW) and
cardboard poster . You can also include a cross-section done in a computer
graphics program.
