metric graph paper
erasable soft pencil (No. 2) and eraser
Brunton (supplied)
AIM: Draw a map of all the footpaths in the quadrangle to scale
STEPS:
CALIBRATING YOUR STEPS
1. Walk the back of the Geology building and measure its length in paces
Question: How many paces long is it?
2. Measure the length of your average stride with a tape measureand
calculate the length of the back wall of the Geology building in meters,
approximately.
MAKING A SCALE
3. Walk the length and breadth of the quadrangle. How long and wide
is it in paces?
4. Calculate a scale that will allow you to fit the length and width
of the quadrangle on your paper. The edges of the buildings should show
on your map. Note the names of each of the buildings.
ORIENTATION
5. Mark the direction of N on your map (use your Brunton)
Place the rear wall of the Geology building on the right side of your graph paper
