The Department of Geology and Geophysics at LSU offers an outstanding graduate program in the earth sciences. Both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Geology are granted by the Department. Areas of specialization include biostratigraphy and paleontology, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology, stratigraphy and sedimentology, and tectonics. Graduate study in geology and geophysics at LSU provides a balanced combination of course work and independent research. Student and faculty research projects are focused on important geologic problems throughout the United States and on nearly every continent. Graduates of the Department have been highly successful in obtaining employment in academia, government, and industry.
