The Department of Geology and Geophysics offers several forms of financial aid to graduate students. You will be considered for all of these if you check the appropriate box on the application form.
Departmental Teaching Assistantships (TA).
Approximately 15 Teaching Assistantships are awarded annually to new and continuing
graduate students. Stipends for the 9-month academic year are $13,500 for M.S. students and
Ph.D. students who have not earned a MS degree or passed their general exams. Ph.D.
students who have earned a M.S. or have passed their general exam receive a stipend of
$15,000. TAs must pay the fees described in the Fees section.
Departmental Research Assistantships (RA)
Research assistantships funded by external grants and contracts obtained by individual
faculty members are awarded at the same stipend levels as the Teaching Assistantships. RAs
must pay the fees described in the Fees section.
Departmental Scholarships and Fellowships
The Department has been fortunate in receiving both fellowship and scholarship funds from
industry, alumni organizations, and geological societies. We currently have a Shell Fellow
and a BP Fellow and a number of students have been awarded Chevron, ExxonMobil, Texaco,
Union Pacific, and Unocal scholarships and scholarships from the New Orleans Geological
Society and Houston Geological Society. For information on additional scholarship and

Louisiana State University has several types of financial aid opportunities available for graduate students. LSU Graduate School Fellowship (US Citizens only) is awarded as a monetary enhancement to their departmental assistantship/fellowship. Board of Regents' Graduate Fellowships (US Citizens only) are awarded to exceptionally well qualified doctoral students at levels of $17,000 per year for up to four years (tuition exempted).
We must have your complete application by January 30 in order to meet the Graduate School deadline of February 15 for nomination of applications for Graduate Fellows and Board of Regents'. Send all of your application materials to the Department for review and processing.
We must have your complete application by January 1 for consideration for Departmental Assistantship support.
