Mailing address: Name
c/o LSU Geology Field Camp
10550 S. Highway 115
Colorado Springs, CO 80926
Telephone: (719) 576-0481
The Camp telephone is prioritized for official use only. Private use is mainly limited to evening and weekend hours. The telephone typically gets heavy use in the evenings and is located in a place where eavesdropping is very easily done. Students are encouraged to have and use a cell phone. Students in the past have had success receiving cell phone signals at Camp using major service providers such as Sprint. Otherwise, students must either place collect calls or use long distance cards on the Camp telephone.
This telephone number is not for call-in use by friends and family except in case of emergency. The Camp does not provide answering or paging services. The phone line is not available for internet use.
To Camp:
All Field Camp Freshmen are expected to get to Camp either by air travel or by LSU vehicles.
Travel by LSU vehicles: A convoy of LSU vehicles operated by LSU-certified drivers, will leave the LSU Geology parking lot early in the morning of May 19th (subject to change by a day or two). Seating and cargo space on these vans are limited. There is no space for non-essential items, especially large ones like bicycles or canoes. There may be space for a few musical instruments the size of a guitar. The van trips to Colorado and back include overnight motel stays somewhere in west Texas. Students who ride to Camp and/or back in LSU vehicles must pay for their own snacks, meals, and lodging. Try to limit your cargo to 1 large soft bag, 1 sleeping bag, and 1 tent (optional).
Travel by air: Pick-ups at the Colorado Springs airport can be arranged. Communicate your travel plans to Dr. Lebold (jlebold@.lsu.edu) as soon as you know them. Upon arriving at the Colorado Springs airport, you may call Camp at the telephone number listed above. But, the only way to guarantee we’ll know to pick you up at the airport is to communicate your plans to Dr. Lebold in advance. If a number of students arrive at the airport at different times, we’ll arrange for only one or two pick-ups, so arrivals earlier in the day may have to wait at the airport a couple of hours.
Plan your arrivial at the Colorado Springs airport before midnight May 25th and departure from the Colorado Springs airport after 1 pm on July 6th. May 26th arrivals before 3:00 p.m. are acceptable in a pinch. Persons who travel into and out of Denver airport must arrange for their own transportation between Denver and Colorado Springs.
Early arriving students:
Cabin space and utilities (electricity, showers, and toilets) will be available after the May 19th. The first official camp meal served will be dinner on Sunday evening, May 25th, at 6:00 pm. Food may not be available prior to then, so early arriving students should bring enough money to purchase food in Colorado Springs. Students are responsible for cleaning their own living space. Students who arrive before May 25th will be put to work preparing camp in exchange for housing & facilities.
