Description

The Rio Negro is the major northern tributary of the Amazon draining the eastern slope of the Oriental [Andes].  It joins with the Solimoes River at Manus to form the Amazonas, the worlds largest river. The Rio Negro is unique in that the slope of the Lower Amazonas is only about 2 to 3 cm/km.  This creates a delta rather than a flood plain.
