The delta masks are contributed by Mr. John Kineman from the Boulder Data Center. The were generated by John Kineman, Frank Vacanti and Ms. Rozita Abdul-Manap within the Center. The delta masks encompass the designated areas-of-interest [AOI] for each delta. Within each mask is a DEM [digital elevation model] that can be used as the basis for extracting data from other images. In developing each mask the method was to use the 30-min global elevation database for the terrestrial boundary, smoothing and selecting the contour that runs through the threshold between alluvial valley and the head of the delta. The 2-min bathymetry database was used to identify depth contour that runs along the shelf break. The above process was essentially automatic. The along-shore limits were cut by hand after consultation with George Hart. These boundary-limits were then combined and the final image was buffered-out by distance to smooth data irregularities and errors and produce a homogenous region representing the AOI. The AOI delta masks are used to produce shape-files, vector and raster masks that can be used in standard geographic information programs to select geographically restricted area from any other geo-registered data-sets e.g. true and false colour mosaics of Landsat MSS, TM and ETM (80's, 90's and 00's) covering the AOI for each delta for land use and land-change studies; and, SRTM (elevation) data, at 90 m resolution. |
