Unsaturated or Vadose Zone

Porosity and Water Content of Soil

Porosity - volume of voids divided by total volume

n = Vv/V

where Vv = volume of void space

V = volume of sample

Void Ratio - volume of voids divided by volume of solids
e = Vv/Vs

where Vs = volume of solids

Note:

V = Vv + Vs

Gravimetric Water Content - ratio of weight of water to weight of solid grains

where Ww = mass of water in soil

Ws = mass of solid particles

Volumetric Water Content - volume of water divided by total volume

where Vw = volume of water

Saturation Ratio - volume of water divided by volume of voids
Rs = Vw/Vv
Dry Bulk Density - weight of solids divided by total volume

Particle Density - weight of solids divided by volume of soilds

Capillary Forces

Attraction (surface tension) between liquid and solid causes fluid to be pulled upward against gravity. How high the fluid rises depends on pore throat radius
