White Sulphur Springs, Louisiana

We found an interesting, historical spring site north of Alexandria, LA. At least two springs discharge along side the main highway and off  a dirt road in the woods. Both of the springs have been severely impacted by "tourists", but geochemical and microbial data can still be collected.

This sulfidic spring has been modified with piping and concrete. White mats have formed under the pipe and downstream of the pipe; phototrophic organisms (e.g., algae) grown where H2S is low.

Historical report on White Sulphur Springs

Main spring orifice in gazebo near highway. Beer bottles, clothes, and trash fill the pool now. White mats are to the left of the round spring pool.

Sampling spring water and mats.
